Dear Mr. Davis,

I am writing to express my interest for the mechanical engineering position at [Company X] in [City, State]. I was pleased finding the vacancy on [] under section [Careers at], because I am confident that my technical knowledge and related industry experience can contribute to your team. Therefore, I want you to consider this application for the mechanical engineering position.

To shortly introduce myself, my name is [Name], and I recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the [University] of [City]. As an undergraduate researcher, I gained experience in the areas of mechanical design and analysis, more specifically, prototype design of industrial machine components. I noticed that [Company X] has been engaged in some exciting projects and initiatives over the past few years. As a motivated problem solver and diligent learner, I want to contribute to design changes to mitigate potential issues listed in [News Article] on the company’s website.

During my internship in the Design Department at [Company Y], I successfully designed multiple large-scale tooling assemblies to optimize machine manufacturing. This resulted in a cost-effective solution which saved hundreds of technician hours. Furthermore, I conducted analysis in areas beyond my expertise and reported potential issues such as the overheating of components and chemical leakage. I then remodelled and drafted over 50 components to mitigate these problems. For this effort, I received recognition (see references), but also developed the necessary interpersonal skills to succeed in a dynamic work environment.

I would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my expertise could improve cost-effective and sustainable components for [Company X]. In the attachment, you can find my CV and references. If you have any questions, you can reach me at [Phone number] and [E-mail address]. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,

There are various ways of doing so, for example: Know to whom you need to address your letter to and include the name in the salutation. Write: ‘Dear Mr. Davis,’ or ‘Dear Ms. Davis,’. Avoid generic openings like: ‘Dear Hiring Manager,’ ‘Dear Sir or Madam,’ or ‘To whom it may concern,’. Do extensive research. Check out the company’s staff page, read blogs and news articles. Show that you did your research and are in fact interested in their organization and the job role.
