Dear Mr. Adelman,

With reference to your job posting on [] under section [‘Careers at’], I would like to apply for the Data Scientist position at [Organization X]. My reason for applying for this job is that it allows me to expand my predictive analytics and behaviour analysis capabilities. Therefore, I want you to consider this application for the Data Scientist position in your department.

To shortly introduce myself, my name is [Rick Connor] and I heard about your organization during the Deep Learning Event in Toronto. I had the pleasure of speaking with [Name Surname] and he indicated that [Organization X] needs help transforming clients’ data into tangible business value. I am thrilled about the prospect of analyzing information, communicating outcomes and to collaborate with your department on product development. In addition, working with statistical programming languages listed in the job description happens to be exactly the same experience that I seek for my career path.

During my 5+ years of employment at [Company Y], I worked extensively with Java and Python and statistical programming languages such as: SAS, SPSS and Matlab. For example, last year I built a script that aggregated data from multiple databases and improved user productivity during data analysis by an average of 35%. For these results, I received recognition. Furthermore, I was praised by management for my abilities to debug, troubleshoot and implement solutions to complex technical issues (see references).

I welcome the opportunity to learn more about the Data Scientist position and demonstrate my qualifications. If you want to see some of the projects that I work on in my spare time, see my Github profile: [], or take a look at my portfolio website: []. I have included my resume for your review. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,

Rick Connor

How To Write a Cover Letter For a Data Scientist Position?

Writing Tips For Data Scientists

  1. Firstly: use a simple font and font size that is easy to read: ‘Calibri’, ‘Arial’ and ‘Times New Roman’ with a 10 to 12-point font size is most suitable. Don’t use novelty style fonts like ‘Comic-Sans’, ‘Script style’ or handwriting fonts. In addition, keep a word count of around 300 to 400 words and divide the cover letter into 4 paragraphs.
  2. Secondly: given that you are applying for a data scientist position, it makes sense to do research on the company’s tech stack. Check out or similar sites and find out what programming languages, frameworks or UX solutions the company uses.
  3. Thirdly: as for the salutation, use the abbreviations: ‘Mr.’ or ‘Ms.’ followed by the hiring manager’s name and avoid generic openings like: ‘Dear Hiring Manager,’ ‘Dear Sir or Madam,’ and avoid writing: ‘To whom it may concern,’. Find out to whom you need to address your letter to. Use LinkedIn, check the staff page or even consider calling the company.
  4. Fourthly: thoroughly read the job description and relate the required data science skills to your profile. That means you don’t simply list your skills like you do in your resume, but instead you bring context in numbers, percentages or refer to your attached portfolio. Key here is to inform the reader that you actually obtain the necessary skills to do the job.
  5. Fifthly: Maintain a tone of voice that is confident, courteous and sincere. Don’t ask for a follow up in the form of an interview but instead tell the reader what you want to further discuss about. At last, thank the reader for taking their time and consideration.
