- Use the appropriate font: Calibri, Arial or Times New Roman, and a 10 to 12-point font size. Keep a word count of around 300 to 400 words and divide the cover letter into 4 paragraphs. Keep your cover letter short, concise and to the point. Don’t exceed the one page document.
- Thoroughly read the job description and pay attention to keywords that are used more than once. These usually have a higher priority to the reader.
- Emphasize your experience with Microsoft Office software such as: excel, word, powerpoint, outlook and more. If you lack technical skills, try to focus on personal traits like being punctual, detail-oriented or your verbal and written communication skills.
- Don’t restate your resume but provide context in numbers, percentages, years of experience or refer to the attached references where your former employers confirm your qualifications.
- Don’t use long complicated sentences but write in simple English. Maintain an overall tone of voice that is: confident, courteous and sincere. Also, proofread your cover letter and use Word’s spelling check.
